This guy is an ancestor of mine... I'm his greatx13-granddaugher.
Rev. Thomas Hooker, Jr. born in 1586 in the UK and dying in 1647 in Hartford Ct, usa. Now, to be honest, the guy looks like a total sour puss. If I'd known him in real life, i probablly would have run screaming into the (wilderness) night - with him screaming (spittle flying) hell-fire and damnation after me. Puritans were considered radicals in the UK and had to flee for their lives. Lucky us, they settled in the america's yeah?
now, THIS guy, is my g-g-g-grandfathers brother
Augustus Lewis Cowart (and boy, i'll bet he learned to fight real good and real early) and his wife, nancy. This looks like one tough buzzard, fightin' injins (no relation at this point. that can be proved!) and just about ready for anything. And nancy looks like she's got a good sense of humor (probably needed with that old coot!). These people I think I would have been proud to know. Here's August in his youth:
Corporal Augustus Lewis Cowart, our boy in blue.
Acutally, I've got boys in grey and blue, but dont have pictures. |

My son Avery is having back surgery today. He's got a bulging vertabre that is pinching the nerve to his leg. 24 and he's "getting old" - he always was really rough on his body. He's on facebook, so I caved and got a facebook page, just to keep up with him.

Since discovering this, and talking to other family members (newly discovered!) I've been told from two different sources that they'd heard rumors that Jack changed his name because he'd killed someone. I did more researching, and found this:
The Lima Daily Times Lima Ohio, Friday, May 17, 1889 Fears of a Riot Dover, N.H. May 17. - When work was recommenced on the water works this spring, Alonzo Smith, who did the shooting in the Fourth street Italian riot here last June, was given charge. Trouble has been brewing for two weeks and a climax was reached yesterday when sixteen Americans left work. Another riot is feared for the workman swore vengeance on Smith. The works are a mile from the city.
Now, I've been reading a lot of news papers from the '85-'90s, and getting lynched is pretty common. If I had 16 guys swearing vengeance on me, I'd high-tail it out of town and change my name, too! I've not been able to find any articals on the Fourth st. Italian riots of June 88, yet. |

Deep into research mode, I've re-found this picture (posted it yonks ago, on LJ). I know its my great-grandmothers father (in the middle). I now know a bit about him. His birth name was Alonzo Smith, but he changed it to Jack Sloan. I've no idea why he changed it, or why he changed it so radically. (guessing, i think he got in trouble with the law, and needed to 'disapear'.) He was born in 1865, so guessing (again) this picture is around 1885. His daddy, Enoch, emigrated from scotland, and where I got Jacks moms name, I'm not sure if she was indian, yet. By the looks of him, I'd say she was. ( piccie, pretty small ) More research pulled up a news artical from jan 1878. quote:
Alonzo Smith, the prisoner who was sentenced at the Sullivan county court last week to four years and six months imprisonment in Clinton prison for burglary, was afterwards arraigned on indictments charging him with breaking and attempting to break jail, and sentenced with two years imprisonment in Albony Penatentary to commence on the expiration of his first sentence.
end quote. Doesn't seem fair they gave him a year for 'attempting to break jail' and another year for actually suceeding. anyway, i do realize there is more than 1 alonzo smith in the world, during the years he lived. And i relalize it might be a totally different alonzo. BUT. The years match up really well. Alonzo Smith born 1856. In 1878, at 22, he's imprisoned for 6 1/2 years. in 1884, at 28, hes released. alonzo smith disapears, and Jack Sloan shows up. 4 years later, hes married and starts making babies, all born in the 1890s. He was 32 when his first baby is born - very late start for people of his generation. I'm thinking it's him. |

The Koran, according to writer haifa_zangana, forbids the killing of trees, which makes me wonder how the Fox "News" drones explain the fact that the "Muslim Marxist" President is keeping up the tradition of putting a Christmas tree in front of the White House--a real tree, a slaughtered tree.
I'm kidding. I don't expect the Fox "News" drones to have that much knowledge about the Koran. And, of course, the fact that Obama attended a beer summit a few months back didn't seem to cause them much cognitive dissonance (nor does the unveiled First Lady*)--but maybe they were too busy being bothered by the fact that Sgt. James Crowley couldn't arrest Obama as well.
Anyway, I'm not even sure why I'm rambling on this topic. I was actually planning to sit down and write something about the contradiction of people who look at multi-term Latin American leaders like Hugo Chávez as despotic--and speak of their multiple terms as the most damning single criterion that qualifies them as despots--but seem to lack even the slightest concern over the nearly limitless power of the "immortal collectivist persons" (Chomsky's words) called corporations. But I'm running out of mental steam at the end of the day, so maybe that's why I unconsciously chose the former topic. I've been reading Michael Parenti's Dirty Truths, and Parenti's thoughts on corporate power often become springboards for my own; but unlike his, mine don't often turn into anything coherent.
( For lack of a better conclusion to this entry, below is a comprehensive list of the books I read this year. ) |
